Off The Back – Struggles of a cyclist
I’m Eric.
Why ‘Off The Back’? Back many years ago, I was a member of the University of Wyoming cycling team. Not a very good member, but a member none the less. One day, some of the guys on the team were talking and they kept calling one guy ’OTB’. I finally asked them what OTB stood for, ‘Off the back’ they said, because he was always the first to get dropped on our training rides. I knew the differecne between him and I was the ability to hang on a few minutes longer. I don’t remember his name, I don’t remember the guys who were talking about him, I don’t know any of the when, where or hows, all I know was I was happy to not be OTB. Though, I’m probably MOTP (middle of the pack) guy now or at least UCHWTP (Usually Can Hang With The Pack) guy, it doesn’t hurt to remember where you came from.
Struggles of a cyclist? I have to admit, that when I started this blog, the struggles were ‘keep up with the pack’, ‘get up the next climb’, and ‘put in that extra mile’. Now, I’m not sure that is the case. I’ve worked hard over the last few months and this blog has helped keep me focused on what I was trying to accomplish. Today, the struggles have changed. I’m stronger than I was. I don’t worry as much about how fast and how strong and how far I ride. At time, those are all still challenges, but the real challenge now is keeping it all together. Balancing all the different aspects of my life – family, work, and cycling.
